Big Boy Polar

Our big boy Polar came to visit for a weekend while his family was on a cruise. Polar is almost two years old. He is by CH T-Snow Star's All the Above out of Solid Gold Bearied Treasure RE. This boy is a sweet as he could be and full of hugs and kisses. He enjoyed romping in the back yard with our pack. Couldn't have asked for a better houseguest.

Sledding...almost

We enjoyed the opportunity to participate in the SAMD sledding outing at John and Joanne Studebaker's house this weekend. Unfortunately due to the warm weather we had to use carts instead of sleds, but it didn't stop us from having a good time! After spending time playing with the dogs, we ate a delicious lunch and had an informal puppy match. It was great to catch up with so many of the puppies from litters we have bred!

Thank you judge Judith Goodin for this major win at Novi, Michigan! Ten years ago Ms. Goodin gave Phantom's great grandfather a group placement so I was very excited to get the opportunity to show Phantom to her. To my delight she gave him his first major. Sure brought back marvelous memories and it was fun to chat with her about it. Proud of my Phantom boy!

Novi is Good to Solid Gold

Over the years the Novi shows have been very good to Solid Gold Samoyeds and this year was no exception. Phantom won a three point major and a single point there this weekend and his littermate Maya won two points which leaves her needing only two to finish! What a great weekend it was. In addition, I completed rally apprenticing judging. Then I got to see Solid Gold Winter's Chill strut his stuff at the match on Friday night with his darling owner Courtney. To learn on the ride home that the Patriots are going to the Superbowl was frosting on a very nice cake.

CH Kodiak's Solid Gold Moment

We are deeply saddened by the passing of a great dog CH Kodiak's Solid Gold Moment. He was owned and loved by Blake and Christie. Kodiak was born here in Michigan in May 1999. Christie came into Kodiak's life when he was a few weeks old and she was 15. Together they lit up the show rings with him finishing his championship quickly and going on to group placements. He sired one litter which included two champions, Ernie and Boston. After Christie married Blake, Kodiak moved to Colorado with them and lived an active life as a retired show dog. Kodiak is the love of Christie's life and he will be waiting for her at the rainbow bridge. Good night sweet boy, may your trails be smooth and wind always at your back.

Yellow Wins Big

Cute little Yellow Boy is a big winner when it comes to homes. He is much loved by Kara, Jon and Katelyn! This lucky and very sweet boy will be a best friend and study partner when Kara goes to med school next year. She hopes he will be a good therapy dog and family dog for the future and he certainly is just the right boy for that! His name is Solid Gold Alaskan Vista and they call him Kenai which is a picturesque peninsula in Alaska. We expect he will grow up to be a very beautiful boy which is fitting for such a name.

Red Girl Gets Going

Red Girl was always the leader of the pack with this group. Funny thing is, she had some secret admirers in Indiana who were hoping they would get to take her home. Red Girl is a marvelous show prospect with terrific movement and a beautiful upright structure. She is also cute as the dickens and she knows it. Sara and Randy were delighted to get to take her home and said the rest of the family was hoping it would be Red Girl. She is now Solid Gold Nakiska Ice, named after a beautiful place they visited during the Olympics of 1980. Kiska gets to live on a golf course and she is already making herself at home in the club house.

Blue Boy was Next

Beautiful Blue Boy was declared show quality by a Samoyed judge based on his gorgeous face, great bone and pleasing look. Lots of folks from around the country were very much in love with this boy, but it was Caroline and Bill who got to take him home with them to Ohio. Caroline's heart was broken when she lost Queen Samantha over the summer. Samantha was Blue Boy's great aunt so it is a family connection. We know Samantha would approve. Caroline adores her little Blue Boy and looks forward to trying agility and maybe the show ring. She named him Kodiak but needs to spend a little more time picking just the right formal name.

Violet's Turn

Violet is a people dog. He loves everyone, gives kisses and wags his tail all the time. His new family has had many Samoyeds over the years and they appreciate the gentle and outgoing nature of the breed. Rick and Peggy took a shine to Indigo and named him Solid Gold Classical Jazz to reflect their love of music. Jazz is making himself right at home having met many people and dogs in the neighborhood already.

Indigo's New Family

Indigo Boy is a character. If you bark at him, he will bark back and then howl. We knew his family had to be very special. Lucky him he has two wonderful parents in Courtney and Jason but also two brothers! His family is very active and loves the winter. He lives on a lake where he will get to pursue winter sports with the family. No wonder they named him Solid Gold Winter's Chill. They call him Chilly!

Orange Girl Finds Love

Orange Girl found a special place in Ethel's heart when she snuggled with her one evening several weeks ago. A show girl from the start, Orange Girl is now known as Schatzie, a German word for Little Treasure. Her registered name will be Solid Gold Peaches 'N Cream. We feel fortunate to be able to co-own her and look forward to taking her to shows in the future, but most of all we feel lucky to have such a great home for Schatzie where she will be loved forever.

Red Girl is leader of the pack. She scurries over the side of the box instantly and then turns and encourages her sibling to join her. They scream and wiggle waiting for some human to push their little bodies over the top so they can join her. Green Boy is the only other one who can make it over on his own, but he can't get back into the box like she can. And would you believe she is the smallest one?

Grandma's Love

Grandma Boston loves her grandkids! She waits patiently each day for her opportunity to go in to the box and give them all kisses. As you can see the feeling is mutual. We had a lovely weekend at Traverse City. Polar (Solid Gold Kodiak's Treasured Snobear) was Best of Breed all three days for 3 points. His mom Treasure (Solid Gold Bearied Treasure RA) was WB one day for 1 point, AND she finished her Rally Excellent title with two placements in Excellent A. And then Maya (Solid Gold Ribbon N'Tin) was WB two days for 2 points. Maya needs just four single points to finish her championship. COngratulations to junior handler Jessica Moerland for her great handling over the weekend.

Major Weekend

Traveled to Novi, Michigan with my friend Melissa and met up with dog show friends, for a very nice weekend in the frigid weather. On Saturday and judge surprised the socks off of me when he pointed to my sweet Clipper puppy as his winners. It was a 4 point major and she was there just to keep the points up! Wow, what a way to start her show career! Then Sunday, Melissa's Maya took her second major with the expert handling of Karen Potter. Majors are very important to finishing a championship so it is awesome when two of them come along in one weekend! Judge here is Victor Clemente.

Boston Does us Proud

I was surprised to learn this weekend that Boston was 2nd top rally Samoyed for the Samoyed Club of America in 2009. She was one of only two Samoyeds to earn the RAE title that year, which is a difficult task. It requires a team to qualify in two different rally classes (Advanced and Excellent courses) at the same trial, ten times. This takes not only a good working team but also a dog that can handle the stress of competing twice in one day, sometimes with only a short break between classes. Boston never NQ'd in any of her trials and she place in most of them! Thank you Boston for being such a fun partner in the ring and in life.

Our Polar puppy stepped in to the ring for the first time in Atlanta Georgia two weeks ago and won Best of Winners both days for his first two points. His mother Treasure was also winners one day for a point. It was so much fun to get the pictures back today and to see how nice they looked. Polar is the former Red Boy from the Answer x Treasure litter. His proud dad is CH T-Snow Stars All the Above.

SCA National

What a nice national specialty the Samoyed Club of America put on. We traveled to Altanta Georgia first for a conference and a dog show, then drove up to Sylva North Carolina for a visit with relatives we hadn't seen in a while. Then through the mountains to Pigeon Forge Tennessee. The hotel was a bust, but the show itself was awesome. Treasure brought home the bacon with placements in obedience and rally, getting her first legs in novice obedience and excellent rally. The two puppies we took had a blast and turned some heads but didn't make the ribbons. Too big and too clumsy. :) BUT Polar puppy did take two points down in Atlanta so we were very pleased. Now back to work, and reality! Pictures to follow.

It is a satisfying way to spend a weekend, even if it is hard work! My friend Melissa and I took off for the dog show while Mike stayed home to work. Little Treat (DreamWeaver's Tasty Treat) was winners dog two days in a row for a point each day, and then Maya, aka Solid Gold Ribbon N Tin won her first major in tough competition for 3 points! Maya is Green Girl from the Austin x Korbel litter. She is growing up very nicely and it was a pleasure to be able to present her.

A Thank You for Deb

At the trial on Friday I recognized the rally judge as someone who made a special memory for one of my friends. Several years ago my friend Deb and her beautiful but silly Samoyed Cubby were showing in obedience in Wisconsin. Cubby put his head through the ring gate to visit someone during his heeling pattern. Deb was not very happy and a bit embarrased. Later the judge called her into the ring for her ribbon. "But I didn't qualify" exclaimed Deb. "Today, in my ring you did!" said the judge. Deb was thrilled and often talked about how a day can seem to be going so badly and then someone turns it around with a simple kindness. She and Cubby did deserve their ribbon that day and I was happy for her. We often laughed about it together. So yesterday I shared the story with the judge. You see, Deb lost her battle with pancreatic cancer last year so I wanted to tell the judge she gave my friend a special memory and happiness. I wasn't sure the judge would remember, but she said, "Oh that was in Fon du lac." "Yes Fon du lac". We both cried a little and embraced the memory of Deb and her beautiful friend Cubby.

New Title for Treasure

Solid Gold Bearied Treasure has a new Rally Advanced title having finished it at the Traverse City dog show on Friday with a 98 and 2nd place. She was the most naked dog there having given up her beautiful Samoyed coat for her puppies, but we didn't care. No hair on a hot day is very nice indeed.

The Fastest Clipper Ship

Life for the puppies now is about learning to love everyone and every thing! Our house is filled with people daily as our friends help us socialize the puppies. Even the Pomeranians have their assignments.

It was a busy day. Lorraine and Jill helped me wash and blowdry all five puppies and then we took their six week ribbon pictures. They are six weeks old today. In birth order it is Red Boy, Orange Boy, Yellow Girl (aka Clipper), Green Boy and Blue Boy. Looking good!

Growing Fast

The puppies are growing fast and are up trying to walk. Sunday they all weighed just about 3 lbs. which is up from 1 pound two weeks ago! We had visitors over the weekend who enjoyed holding the babies. Since Treasure knows and trusts them she was very happy to share and didn't mind one bit when they passed puppies around. Eric was the one who found a dime and then a penny to compare to the puppies foot. Great thinking Eric!

Treasure and Answer are the proud parents of four boys and one girl born early this morning. Mother and pups are doing well. The boys all weighed over 1 lb and the girl was 15.4 oz.

Getting Close

Treasure is in stage one of labor. This early stage is one of restlessness, panting and some brief rest periods. She has refused food all day. Pups should begin to arrive in the middle of the night or early tomorrow. She is staying mainly in her box, but only because it is the only option being offered. She would prefer to go outside and dig a hole to have the puppies in. It is going to be a long night.

The Beach

We are blessed to live so close to the beach. Treasure enjoyed one last walk as a pregnant gal today and stopped to feel the wind in her hair. In a week she will be on full time maternity duty so it was nice to enjoy the wind, sand and fresh air.

Treasure Pupdate

Treasure and I went down to the Grand Haven boardwalk at sunset today and walked for forty minutes. Even though her girth is expanding, she sure can move through the crowd. Treasure looks like she is carrying a beach ball. Makes sense; as of a couple of days ago she had gained 12 lbs! This weekend we will set up the whelping box so it is ready for her next week. It is going to be in my office next to the computer so we can hang out together. On Monday she goes in for an x-ray to see how many little ones are in there, and then the web cam will go up at the end of the week. Stay tuned!

Treasure is getting ready to have her puppies in a couple of weeks. She isn't too happy about bath time as you can see. Notice her ears. The tummy is expanding each day and she loves to have us rub it. Food is on Treasure's mind constantly and even after a full meal she will put her feet up on the top of her crate where the dog cookies are hoping for more. We can't seem to fill her up.

Award of Merit

Awards of Merit at a national specialty are a very rare event for a breeder. They are highly coveted and many breeders have never earned one on a dog. So today was a day that Mike says he will never forget as long as he lives. His Digger boy won the older veteran's class at the Pomeranian National specialty yesterday, and then today....CH Desert Thunder of Lenette RN went into Best of Breed to play with the big boys! Digger will be 13 years old on March 27th and was by far the oldest Pom at the show, but on this day....he showed all the young ones how it is done. Buns in the Oven

Ultrasound done Tuesday reveals Treasure has buns in the oven. Puppies due approximately April 12th. Now we all wait for the stork to arrive. Looking forward to that life altering event.

Lovely Sarah went to heaven to wait by the rainbow bridge for Ethel on Saturday. Sarah was a party girl, the best trench digger I ever knew and a very sweet friend to everyone she met. She was Aunt Sarah to Boston and best friend to Whitney and Kody Bear growing up. Rest in peace my darling girl until we meet again.

Promise Made and..

Sweet Sioux

April 23, 2000 - February 20, 2010

Her name was CH Lakota Sioux of Lenette. She was the sweetest Pomeranian I ever met. Sioux loved everyone she knew; she was gentle, fragile and oh so very beautiful. Her greatest love in life was puppies..didn't matter who's puppies they were or if they were Pomeranians or Samoyeds, she wanted to be their mom. She would kick out her boot (rear foot) and chatter to you, and insist you let her see the puppies. It was not unusual for her to climb into the whelping box of a litter, to inspect the puppies and wash them up. Sadly she never had any of her own because they would have been spectacular. Sioux was a group winning Pom who was #3 Pom bitch in the country one year with very limited showing. Here she is in 2004 when she won Best of Breed and Group 3 at the Toy Specialty in Michigan under Mike's favorite judge the late Peggy Hogg. Sioux left us way too soon and we will miss her forever. Rest in peace Sioux and take care of all those puppies up there, you are now their guardian angel.

Treasure's Valentine

Sweet Treasure reports from Denver, Colorado that Answer has agreed to be her Valentine. He is CH T-Snow Stars All the Above and he is very handsome. Apparently he has all the right stuff. Treasure will be back in Michigan soon to wait for the stork.

Congratulations to Austin and Sierra who became the proud parents of nine puppies over night. The puppies weigh between 12 and 17 oz and are all doing well. There are 5 boys and 4 girls. They live in Pennsylvania.

Around the Clock

Boston is currently training in utility which is the highest level in obedience. One of the exercises she must learn is scent discrimination. She must find the article I put my scent on out of a pile of 12 articles (six leather and six metal). While training is it important for her to learn to work the pile in a circle scenting all of them until she comes to the right one. I am using Janice DeMello's Around the Clock system which has a chart on the floor. Each night she retrieves one article for me (we are starting with metal) 11 times. Each time there is one more article added to the chart, so she has to work harder to find it. If she goes "around the clock" while looking and stops to lick cheese off the correct one and then brings it, she has completed the exercise. Here she is demonstrating finding and bringing the article in the final retrieve for the session.

Mike stepped out to the annual kennel club dinner sporting his new tie compliments of nieces Briana and Courtney. The tie features the six pack from last year. A tiny bit of ribbon showing on each one so we clearly recognize Morgan, Aspen, Phantom, Maya, Anastasia and Eddie! This is a gift he will never forget.

Boston is enjoying the snow this season. Here she is relaxing in the fresh fallen snow. She can sleep for hours in the snow. I think it is her favorite time of year. With a more relaxed holiday schedule there is plenty of time to enjoy the outdoors.

Long Dog Show Days

We started our days at the show this weekend before they played the Star Spangled Banner and left the building late in the afternoon after Best in Show. The pedometer read over 14, 000 steps walked per day, and at the end of two days, Korbel and Boston each had new titles, Austin had a major, Korbel and Treasure both had reserves to majors and Treat had a Best of Breed. Whew!

Sometimes dog shows are good to you, even if they exhaust you. The girls did really well in Rally with Boston finishing her RAE title, placing 2nd in Advanced B the second day. Korbel completed her RA title and was 1st both days in Advanced A. Treasure got her first two Rally Advanced legs and was 2nd and 3rd.

Over in the conformation ring, Treasure was Reserve to the major on Saturday, Korbel was Reserve to the major on Sunday and Austin won the major in boys on Sunday and was Best Opposite for 4 points. Treat was not to be out done though, he went Best of Breed on Sunday for another point and a trip to the group ring.

What a very nice way to spend the weekend!

Double Play

At the show last week, Pomeranians and Samoyeds were in the ring at exactly the same time, so Mike and I had to go in different directions. In fact, the rings were in separate rooms. The good news was we both had the Winners Dog. It is always nice when you score a double play.

A Rally Good Time

We are having a rally good time in Indianapolis Indiana at the Samoyed Club of America national specialty! Here Treasure weaves through the cones cruising her way to 2nd place with a score of 99....losing 1st by 2 seconds! She was joined by Korbel in Advanced A with a 1st place and Boston with a 4th in Excellent B and her 8th RAE leg.

Table Topper

Some people put a pot of flowers on their deck table. That isn't possible at our house, but we have our own version of a flower pot. Ms. Korbel loves to view the yard from above...way above the rest of the crowd. It has its advantages. She is closer to the squirrels this way.

Here is her Best in Sweeps pick, a lovely black and silver boy owned by Nancy Coddington. He went on to be Winners Dog and Best of Winners later in the day at the specialty under judge Fred Bassett.

Labor Day Weekend
